Flora of Vale do Lourêdo — Native Plants and Forest Ecosystems of Northern Portugal

The Vale do Lourêdo hosts a diverse range of native plant species typical of the mountain landscapes of Northern Portugal. Located within the Serra do Alvão region and part of the Alvão–Marão Natura 2000 ecological network, the valley supports a mosaic of habitats including deciduous forests, riparian vegetation and open mountain slopes.

These habitats provide favourable conditions for a variety of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants adapted to the Atlantic climatic influence characteristic of the northern Iberian Peninsula.

Nature Guides — Flora

Nature guides reveal the different plant species that occur in the Vale do Lourêdo, presenting information about their biological characteristics, habitats and ecological importance within the valley.

The flora of the valley reflects the ecological diversity of the surrounding mountain landscape. Native forests dominated by deciduous trees coexist with riparian vegetation along streams and riverbanks, creating habitats that support a wide range of plant communities.

These ecosystems also play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity by providing shelter, food sources and ecological balance for numerous animal species that inhabit the valley.

Native Trees and Forest Vegetation

Crataegus monogyna

Flowering usually takes place between March and June, producing clusters of fragrant white, sometimes pinkish flowers

Native oak forest in Northern Portugal

Quercus robur

The species produces distinctive acorns attached to long stalks, a characteristic feature that distinguishes it from other European oaks

Ecological Importance

The plant communities of the Vale do Lourêdo play a fundamental role in maintaining ecosystem stability. Native vegetation protects soils from erosion, regulates water cycles and supports pollinators and wildlife species that depend on forest and river habitats.

The conservation of these plant communities is therefore essential for preserving the ecological balance of the valley and the wider landscapes of Northern Portugal.
